Puerto Madryn

Puerto Madryn sits on the coast of northern Patagonia, overlooking the wide curve of the Golfo Nuevo. Its sandy beaches and lively promenade lined with restaurants make it a welcoming seaside town, but the real stars are out in the bay — southern right whales, which gather here to breed between May and December.Perched on a clifftop, the Ecocentro museum offers fascinating exhibits on Patagonian marine life along with sweeping views from its lighthouse. Just beyond the town lies the UNESCO-listed Valdés Peninsula, a wildlife sanctuary where colonies of penguins and elephant seals thrive — and where orcas are often seen hunting close to shore.

Port Stanley (Falkland Islands)

Port Stanley is full of links to Britain, and is twinned with Whitby in Yorkshire- all of a sudden it seems as if you are back in Britain with red telephone and post boxes. The only difference being the colourful corrugated tin roofs on the buildings. This South Atlantic archipelago will always be associated with the 1982 war, but wildlife and rugged scenery are the main reasons to visit the islands. The Falklands are a compact group of more than 740 Islands, situated approximately 650 kilometres (400 miles) off the south-eastern tip of South America. The total land area is approximately 12,000 square km (4,700 square miles) comprising of mountain ranges and flat plains. The two main Islands are East Falkland and West Falkland. At its eastern end the channel forms part of the border between Chile and Argentina, while the western stretch lies entirely within Chilean territory. Despite being only three miles wide at its broadest, it is a navigational challenge for ships. The channel was named after HMS Beagle, the British ship on which Charles Darwin explored these waters in 1833–34. A visit to Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, reveals a dramatic setting where snowcapped peaks loom on three sides.

Disembark the ship after breakfast at the port of San Antonio and transfer to Santiago airport for you flight home.

Santiago

Santiago is situated approximately 70 miles from the port of San Antonio and has always had its measured charms – fine dining, perfectly landscaped gardens, a famous seafood market, the stunning backdrop of the Andes – but in the past few years it has undergone a cultural metamorphosis. In celebration of Chile's bicentennial, the city poured millions of pesos into the construction of sleek new cultural centres, thoughtful museums and gorgeous green parks. Santiago may never be as glamorous as Rio or as dynamic as Buenos Aires, but now it's more than a stop-off on the way to Chilean Patagonia or the Atacama. Understated but up-and-coming, Santiago just became a destination in its own right.
